Payment errors and what they mean

In the event of a payment being unsuccessful, the payment error description could give an indication of what the problem might be.  The payment error description will display on the payment result page after completing the payment.


Alternatively the failed payment description can be viewed on the Transactions page on the Booksure Dashboard.  Log in to your Booksure Dashboard and click on Transactions



Look for the unsuccessful payment and click on View.  The reason for the transaction failing will be displayed in the popup:




Below is a list of possible payment errors, what they mean and what to do if you come across them:


Bank Response Codes
Response Detailed Response
Acceptor Contact Acquirer Bank (card issuer) has declined the transaction. The customer should contact their bank and retry the transaction.
Acceptor Contact Acquirer, Security The customer should use an alternative credit card. The bank can provide more details.
Authentication unavailable for VISA    Retry the payment and select 'Corporate Card' on the payment page.
Bank Not Supported by Switch The cardholder's bank has declined the transaction as it does not allow transactions originating through mail /telephone, fax, email or Internet orders. This error is associated with customers attempting to use a Discover Card.
Capture Card Declined as transaction as the card is suspected to be counterfeit. The card issuer has requested that your customer’s credit card be retained.
Card Acceptor, Contact Acquirer, Retain Card Declined and requested that the card be retained as the card was reported as lost or stolen.
Contact Acquirer Security Department, Retain Card Declined the transaction and requested that the card be retained.
CVV Validation Error Declined as the CVV is incorrect. Check the CVV details (the 3 numbers on the back for Visa/MC, or 4 numbers on the front for AMEX) and try again. If not successful, the customer should use an alternate credit card.
Denied  /  Please Call This could be as a result of insufficient funds, incorrect CVV or expiry date or a hold on the card.  The bank withholds the exact reason as it is privileged information to the card holder only.  The guest needs to contact his bank to find out the exact reason.
Do Not Honour Declined 
Error Declined as there is a problem with the card number. The customer should contact their card issuer and/or use an alternate card.
Error Code 1051 Error processing PARes.  Issuing bank experienced downtime in their 3D Secure.  Please wait a while and retry the payment.  If the problem persists, contact Booksure Support.
Exceeds withdrawal Declined as the customer has exceeded the withdrawal frequency limit.
Expired Card Declined  as the credit card appears to have expired. Check the expiry date entered and try again.
Expired Card, Capture Declined as the Card has expired or the date is incorrect. Check the expiry date and try processing the transaction again. Sometimes, this error code will be provided if the expiry date is entered incorrectly, NOT only for expired cards.
Format Error The cardholder's bank does not recognise the transaction details being entered. This is due to a format error. The cardholder should check the transaction information and try processing the transaction again.  Make sure the card is not a debit card.  
Function Not Permitted to Cardholder Declined as this credit card cannot be used for this type of transaction.
Function Not Permitted to Terminal Declined  as this credit card cannot be used for this type of transaction. This may be associated with a test credit card number. The customer should contact their bank for further info.
Function Not Supported Declined as it does not allow this type of transaction.
Hot Card The card was reported stolen.  Refrain from accepting a credit card from this guest and request payment in cash.
Incorrect PIN  Usually this error is given when attempting payment with a MasterCard debit card.   If the card is definitely a credit card, please retry the payment.
Insufficient Funds Declined as the credit card does not have sufficient funds.
Invalid Amount An invalid character (e.g. $, & @) may be being passed to the gateway.
Invalid Card Date The expiry date on the card has been entered incorrectly or the card has expired.
Invalid Card Number Declined as the credit card number is incorrectly entered, or does not exist. Check card details and try processing again.
Invalid Track 2 Incorrect combination of expiry date, CVV number and / or card number.  Please check all the information thoroughly and retry the payment.
Invalid Transaction The guest is trying to pay with a debit card or it was denied by the issuing bank and the cardholder must phone his bank.
Lost Card Declined as the card has been reported lost.
No Action Taken Declined as there is a problem with the credit card number. The customer should contact their card issuer and/or use an alternate credit card.
No Card Record Declined  as the credit card number does not exist.
No Credit Account Declined as the Credit Card number used is not a credit account.
No Issuer The cardholder’s card issuer does not exist. Check the card information and try processing the transaction again.
No Merchant Either your merchant facility is non-functional or the details entered are incorrect.
Original Amount Incorrect Declined due to the amount attempting to be processed. The customer should check the transaction amount and try again, contacting their card issuer should the problem persist.
Pick Up Card The card has been reported lost or stolen. Please have the cardholder contact their card issuer directly regarding the error.
Refer to Issuer The cardholder’s bank has indicated there is a problem with the card number. The cardholder should contact their bank or use an alternate card.
Request in Progress Declined as there is a problem with the card number. The customer should contact their bank and/or use an alternate credit card.
Restricted Card Declined as the credit card has some restrictions. The customer should contact their bank for further information.
Restricted Card, Retain Card Declined the transaction and requested that the card be retained.
Security Violation Bank has declined the transaction. The customer should use an alternate credit card and contact their card issuer if the problem persists.
Stolen Card Declined as the card has been reported stolen.
Suspected Fraud Bank has declined this transaction as the credit card appears to be fraudulent.
Suspected Fraud, Retain Card Declined as there is a suspected fraud on this Card number.
Suspected Malfunction The cardholder’s bank could not be contacted during the transaction. The customer should check the card information and try processing the transaction again.
Transaction voided due to timeout The transaction timed out while waiting for a response from the bank and was voided automatically.  Please retry the transaction.
Unable to Locate Record on File The cardholder's bank does not recognise the credit card details. The card information should be checked and try processing the transaction again.
Unable to Process Transaction This indicates connectivity issues at the establishment or between banks – the establishment must retry the transaction.
Unacceptable Transaction Fee An unspecified bank error has occurred. No further information is available from the bank. The customer should attempt to process the transaction again.
